What is a dental emergency?

Dental emergencies comprise a broad range of situations. According to the American Dental Association (ADA), dental emergencies are situations that require immediate dental treatment to stop bleeding, prevent infection, or to alleviate dental pain.

What to do in the Case of Dental Emergencies?

While dental injuries and emergencies cannot be avoided entirely, knowing what to do in case of an emergency can mean the difference between saving a tooth and losing one. Here is a list of common dental emergencies and how you can manage them while you’re waiting to see your dentist for an emergency appointment.

Toothache / Dental Pain

Severe, an uncontrolled toothache is one of the most common situations that require immediate dental treatment. Dental pain can arise due to several reasons:

  • Cavities
  • Fractured tooth
  • Broken fillings
  • Dental infection / Abscess
  • Wisdom tooth pain

When having a toothache, rinse your mouth with mouthwash to clean the area. Usually, a toothache can be temporarily managed by taking any Pain medication (Ibuprofen/Tylenol) However, if the pain does not go away even after taking medication, you must call or text us for an immediate appointment

Something Stuck Between the Teeth

Sometimes a food particle or a foreign object can get stuck between teeth and cause significant pain and discomfort. To remove the foreign object, gently use dental floss to push it out. Avoid using sharp or pointed objects as it can injure your gums or cheeks. You can also try to swish with a mouth wash or water to force the object out. If the above techniques are not successful, then you should call or text us immediately so that our emergency dentist Chicago can remove it for you.

Knocked-out Tooth (Avulsed Tooth)

A tooth can get knocked out during contact sports or any direct trauma to the teeth. If you find yourself in such a situation, carefully hold the knocked-out tooth through its crown while ensuring not to touch its root – and try to insert the tooth back into its position. If that is not possible, then call or text us immediately for an appointment.

If you cannot reinsert the tooth, secure it between your cheeks and gums so that it remains moist. This gives a better chance for the tooth to be saved. You can also store it in milk or any other tooth preservation product that carries the ADA’s seal of approval.

Broken Filling, Crown or Bridge

Broken fillings or restorations normally do not constitute an emergency – unless they cause pain. If the fracture is so deep that it has exposed the tooth’s nervous tissues, it can cause severe pain. In such a situation, you can take a pain medication like ibuprofen or tylenol to reduce the pain.

In the meantime, preserve the broken piece of the crown or bridge and call us immediately for an emergency appointment. Our dentists may repair the filling and/or re-cement the crown or bridge back to its position in some cases. If the damage is too extensive, you may need a root canal treatment to minimize the chance of an infection.

Broken Orthodontic Wire

The pointed edges of a broken orthodontic wire can cause injury to the gums and the cheeks. If you have a broken wire, visit us immediately for emergency treatment. In the meantime, try securing the wire’s sharp edge with utility wax or chewing gum.

How to Prevent Dental Emergencies?

While we cannot avoid dental emergencies altogether, we can take measures to prevent them as much as possible. The American Dental Association recommends the following to minimize the chances of injuries that can lead to emergencies:

  • If you are involved in contact sports, always wear a mouthguard
  • Never use your teeth as a bottle opener
  • Do not chew on ice, popcorn kernels, or hard candies, as they can fracture your teeth
  • Avoid using your teeth as scissors

I went in yesterday due to cavity pain on one of my molars, I was very scared due to Covid-19 and just going to the dentist in general but knew the pain was only going to get worse if I didn't take care of it soon. I ended up needing a temporary crown and will be back in 2 weeks for my permanent crown and some other work. From start to finish everyone in the office made me feel very relaxed, welcomed, and safe. They seem to be taking every precaution for Covid-19 and included a symptom questionnaire before the visit as well as a temperature check prior to being checked in for the appointment. Doctor wore a mask the whole time as well as directed me on when to take mine off and on for his safety. The office was very clean and without dental insurance they clearly laid out my payment options. I'm glad I chose their office during this time and look forward to getting my dental health on track.

Visited due to my dentist not being open after 2pm(???...) so had an emergency and called them up. They took me in within 30 minutes of calling and started the process for a root canal. Came the next day and got second of 3 phases done. One thing, they are open late. Second, the staff is extremely nice and helpful as well as understanding with insurance concerns. The Dr. and assistant were very courteous to my pain needs and did everything they could to alleviate any pain. This is not some scam in an out place. They do take their time. They give you a shot then let you sit and watch tv for a little while to let it come on. So this is not exactly the fastest dentist you will go to if you have work needs. But they are absolutely thorough. They are gentle and caring. I recommend 100%. We all fear the dentist but this is a place that I don't feel judged, they care for my pain, and have a definite plan to get me on the right path.

I was SO incredibly nervous about having a root canal done because I always really struggle to stay numb during dental procedures. I am such a baby that I am more scared of tooth procedures than I am of actual surgery... I talked to the docs at Wicker Park Dental and they worked with me to make sure I was comfortable the entire time, and they really made sure I was at ease. I had less pain with this root canal than I've had in the past with even small cavities, and I'm so thankful that they listened to my concerns and helped get me taken care of! Everyone inside was incredibly nice, they checked on me constantly and adjusted any time I needed anything, and the office is clean and beautiful. Highly, highly recommend!
